The W113's journey began with the introduction of the 230 SL in 1963. This model was designed to offer a more comfortable and safer driving experience, featuring a monocoque chassis, front disc brakes, and an independent rear suspension. Its 2.3L M127.II inline-six engine delivered 150 hp, and it was available with either a 4-speed manual or an automatic transmission. The distinctive "Pagoda" roof, designed by Paul Bracq, not only gave the car its nickname but also improved headroom and contributed to its unique silhouette.
In 1967, the series saw a brief but significant update with the 250 SL.
